Diamonds – the Buying Guide for Jewellery Lovers

Diamonds really can be a girl’s best friend.  Or a boy’s.  We’re not sexist here.  How do you know what to shop for though, or where the place to buy your jewellery pieces from is?  I am lucky enough to have a few diamond rings, including one of the claddagh diamond engagement rings.  In this blog post, we will talk about the buying process for diamonds and what you need to know before making a purchase.

What are the types of diamonds?

Diamonds can be categorized into two main types.  The first is a rough diamond, which is the most abundant type. Rough diamonds are sold as small stones that are sorted individually by colour, clarity, and quality.  The second is a cut diamond which is more expensive than rough diamonds because they have been cut and polished.

What is a diamond cut?

There are many different types of diamond cuts, with different gemstone shapes.  The cut of a diamond refers to the shape and proportions of the stone, and how it reflects light.  The most popular diamond cuts are round, princess, Asscher and radiant.  Dissecting the round stone reveals a single polished face that is either a full or partial circle.  Princess diamonds have two polished cut sides joined by a smooth transition to create a fancy eight-pointed star.  The Asscher cut has four graduated rounded edges leading to pointed tips on each side. The radiant cut has six polished sides and angles, with a large round brilliant cut in the centre.  The impact of diamond highlights.  Diamond, being the hardest natural material on earth, is often used as an ornament for jewellery making. This makes diamonds highly reflective and durable against scratches or cracks.

What are the 4C’s?

The 4C’s of diamonds are clarity, cut, colour and carat.  Diamonds are evaluated on these four qualities to identify their worth.  Clarity refers to how many inclusions, blemishes, and flaws a diamond has.  Cut refers to the size and shape of the diamond.  It can be round, princess cut or Asscher cut.  Colour is determined by the number of shades a diamond can display, including colourless diamonds.  Carat is one measure of a diamond’s worth.  It is the weight of the diamond in carats and is typically used interchangeably with gram weight.  Clarity refers to how many inclusions, blemishes, and flaws a diamond has.  Diamond grades are determined by their cut grade and clarity grade.  The bigger the diamonds, the more inclusions and imperfections they will have.

How do I know if my diamond is real or not?

There are many ways to distinguish a real diamond from a fake, but the most common is by referring back to the 4 Cs: carat, cut, colour and clarity.  Some of these factors can be seen with the naked eye, such as clarity and colour.  But for those who need more specific information about their diamond’s cut or carat weight, lab testing is the only way to know for sure.  Lab testing is the only way to know for sure if a diamond is real or fake.  Lab-testing isn’t the only way to detect a fake diamond, but it is one of the most reliable methods.  The 4 Cs (carat, cut, colour, and clarity) are considered to be the 6 most important factors in determining the realness of a diamond. The 4 Cs are typically inspected by a jeweller. For example, if a diamond is too cloudy or has uneven colouring, it probably isn’t real.
